Pallet Town
???'s House
You start off by entering your name and rival's name, and an introduction to the outstanding world of Pokemon. Then you find yourself in your room at your house. If you look around you'll see a PC. Turn it on (press A). Select "WITHDRAW ITEM." Take out the Potion. Then go to your right, downstairs. Exit your house and go outside.
Potion: a recovery item that heals up to 20 lost HP (Health Points)
You can explore and talk to people. When you go Professor Oak's lab, you'll see that he is not there. Don't bother waiting for him, he'll never get there. So just go north, out of Pallet Town to go training.
Professor Oak's Research Lab
Prof. Oak stops you and brings you to his lab. He'll give you a Pokemon. In Red/Blue, you can choose Bulbasaur (Grass/Poison Seed Pokemon), Charmander (Fire Lizard), or Squirtle (Water Tiny Turtle). Bulbasaur is recommended. He is good against the first three gym leaders. Squirtle is good against the first gym leader but not the next three. Charmander is not very good against the first two at all, but against Erika. In Yellow, you'll just get a Pikachu. In Red/Blue, your rival will pick the Pokemon which is powerful against yours; however, it won't have the advantage until later. In Yellow, Rival gets an Eevee. After you pick your Pokemon, you and your rival'll have a fight. If your Pokemon's HP goes down very low (less than 5) you should use the Potion. After the battle, if you win, you'll get some money and your Pokemon will gain experience points (EXP. Points) that make it stronger. If your Pokemon is not at full HP after the battle, you should go home, visit Mom, and rest.
Route #1
North of Pallet Town is Viridian City. To get there you have to take Route #1. Right near the beginning, get a free sample of a Potion from the guy from the Viridian City Pokemon Mart. In Route #1, you'll find Pokemon that you can battle for EXP. or run from. The Pokemon are Levels 2-5, and yours is 5 or 6, so you should have an advantage, especially in Yellow. (Pikachu's Thunder-Shock fries the Pidgeys.)
ROUTE # 1
Pokemon Red/Blue Yellow Pidgey (Normal/Flying) 50% (SOME) 60% (MANY) Rattata (Normal) 50% (SOME) 40% (SOME)
Continue north until you reach Viridian City.
