Route #2
North of Viridian city is Route #2, between Viridian and Pewter City. You can catch Nidorans, Caterpies, and in Red and Blue, Weedles.
Viridian Forest
Enter the house and go out the back, and enter Viridian Forest. Make sure you have Antidotes and Poké Balls.
To your left, Yellow players, you'll be challenged by Lass, with 2 Level-6 Nidorans, one male, one female, and $90. If you go north of there and to your left, you'll find (in all versions) a Poké Ball with one inside.
Go east, and as you go north, you'll be challenged by two Bug Catchers.

There are many other trainers in this area. They have Bug-types. Against them, you should use Flyers like Spearow. Be prepared against the Weedles in Red/Blue by having Antidotes. The Kakunas and Metapods you don't have to worry about; they can't attack!
North of the second Bug Catcher, there is another Item Ball with an Antidote in Red/Blue and a Potion in Yellow. You'll find also a Potion further southwestward.

Red and Blue players shouldn't leave without a Pikachu. They are important for defeating Misty. If want a Kakuna or Metapod, you shouldn't catch a wild one. Catch Caterpies and Weedles and battle with them until they evolve.
Wild Kakunas only know Harden, but one you raised from a Weedle will still know its original attacks, Poison Sting and String Shot.
There is a secret, invisible Potion on the ground in front of the last trainer. To get it stand exactly southwest of him. Press A.
Continue north, through another house. Then keep going north through the end of Route #2 and enter Pewter City.
